A Devotional: A Closer Walk with God Like Abraham

This Devotional: A closer walk with God will encourage you as you desire to have a deep relationship with God. There is no greater privilege than walking closely with God. Throughout Scripture, we see men and women who cultivated deep relationships with Him, but one stands out in a remarkable way—Abraham. He was called God’s friend, a title that reflects the depth of his faith and obedience. His journey was not without challenges, yet through every trial, he remained steadfast in his trust. If you long for a deeper relationship with God, Abraham’s life offers powerful lessons on faith, patience, and intimacy with the Lord.

And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,’ and he was called God’s friend.”

Morning Reflection: Answering God’s Call

Abraham’s journey with God began with a call. In Genesis 12:1, God told him, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” Abraham had a choice—stay in comfort or step out in faith. He chose obedience, and that decision deepened his relationship with God.

Have you ever felt God calling you to something greater? Maybe it’s stepping out in faith, letting go of fear, or trusting Him in a new way. When God calls, He also provides. Today, take a moment to reflect:

  • What is God asking of me?
  • Am I willing to follow Him, even when the path is unclear?

Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to follow You, just as Abraham did. Help me to trust Your voice and walk in obedience especially when I cannot see what is ahead of me. Amen.

Midday Meditation: Trusting in the Waiting

Abraham was given a promise—descendants as numerous as the stars (Genesis 15:5). Yet, years passed, and still, no son. It was in the waiting that Abraham’s faith was tested the most. But despite the long wait, he did not waver in his belief (Romans 4:20-21).

Waiting is hard. Maybe you are waiting on God for a breakthrough, a healing, or an answer to prayer. Like Abraham, you may not see immediate results, but God’s promises are never empty. His timing is perfect, and His plans for you are good. Instead of growing weary, use this season to grow closer to Him.

Reflection Questions

  • What promise from God am I holding onto today?
  • How can I trust Him more in the waiting?

Prayer: Father, I surrender my waiting season to You. Strengthen my faith and remind me that You are always working behind the scenes. Amen.

Evening Encouragement: Walking as God’s Friend

James 2:23 tells us that Abraham was called God’s friend. What an incredible title! Friendship with God is not about perfection; it’s about trust, obedience, and daily communion with Him.

As you end your day, consider your walk with God.

  • Are you spending time in His presence?
  • Are you listening for His voice?

True friendship with God comes from a heart that seeks Him above all else. Like Abraham, may we walk in faith, trusting that He is always near.

Prayer: Lord, I desire a deeper relationship with You. Help me to walk closely with You every day, just as Abraham did. Thank You for calling me Your friend. Amen.

Final Thought

A closer walk with God isn’t built in a day—it’s a lifelong journey of trust, obedience, and faith. As you meditate on Abraham’s story, let his example encourage you to step out in faith, trust in the waiting, and cultivate a friendship with God. He is calling you deeper—will you answer?
