Before the Rain Came
“By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family.” – Hebrews 11:7 (NIV)
Have you ever thought how hard it might have been for Noah to build an ark? According to Hebrews 11:7, by faith he built it after God warned him of a flood that was to come. Imagine being told to build something massive for an event no one had ever seen before. There were no clouds forming, no rain falling—just a word from God and a lot of obedience required.
Sometimes, walking by faith looks a lot like that—doing what God says even when it doesn’t make sense. People might not understand your obedience, and the results may not come immediately. But just like Noah, your faith-fueled obedience can become the very thing God uses to bring protection, purpose, and promise into your life.
Faith doesn’t always look impressive at the start; sometimes it looks like picking up a hammer and trusting that what God said will happen, will happen.
If you’ve ever felt uncertain about what God is asking you to do, I wrote more about this in Building Faith When You Can’t See the Outcome
Reflective Questions
- What area of your life is God asking you to trust Him in, even though you can’t see the outcome?
- When have you had to obey God despite uncertainty or fear? How did that experience shape your faith?
- What “ark-building” steps can you take this week to grow in faith, knowing God will handle what you cannot?
- Are there times when you hold onto control instead of surrendering to God? How can you let go and trust Him more?
- How does remembering God’s faithfulness in the past help you step forward in obedience today?
Take a few moments this week to sit quietly with God and reflect on these questions. Write down your thoughts, your fears, and the areas where He is calling you to trust Him more. Then take one small step of obedience—your “ark-building” action—knowing that God sees every effort and will guide you safely through the unseen. Faith grows when we move forward, even before the rain comes.
